Psychology of colors
Colors affect human psychology and their physical condition. Essentially, it is not the body that “desires” colors, but it is the human mind. According to doctors and psychologists anything that can affect human psychology and human mind, can also affect human physical condition.
It is not coincidentally the color that most artists choose
for their studios. Purple color boosts creativity, reduces stress and acts as an emotional stabilizer. Its darker shades, have been connected with the right hemisphere of our brain and it is said that they activate our fantasy and intuition.
Authors of books dealing with the psychological reactions of colors, banter saying that “it is almost impossible to quarrel in a pink room”. Indeed, the color that represents friendship, creates feelings of peace, relaxation and balance. It is considered to relax the muscles and calm down the spirit. However, excessive use can make these effects reach to the extremes, causing idleness and lack of energy. In fact, really intense pink can be tiring to our eyes.
The preference shown by many restaurants or coffee shops in this specific color is not coincidental. Orange color is said to energize the digestive system and open the appetite. If you frequently go on a diet, it is best for you not to paint your kitchen orange. Otherwise, Orange color’s properties are solely positive. It acts as a really powerful antidepressant and also enhances self-confidence. It creates a feeling of warmth in space and helps brain activity. Therefore, it is an ideal solution for a teenager’s room or an office. It is also preferred for bedrooms in softer shades, such as peach orange as
it can offer a wonderful sense of relaxation.
According to a really widespread notion, sunlight has got beneficial properties, something that partially explains the fact that countries with more sunshine have a smaller percentage
in depression and suicides. The color of the sun maintains some of these beneficial properties, thus highly contributing to a good mood, but also to a better organization, determination and optimism. It is said to improve the memory, grand inspiration and renders us
more conciliatory and acquiescent. It illuminates the rooms in a house and attracts attention. A perfect choice for rooms such as the kitchen or the children’s studying room.
Not recommended for relaxation rooms, such as bedrooms. When we choose intense shades to paint with, it may create nervousness, be tiring to the eyes or make us feel uncomfortable. Dark shades of yellow should be avoided, especially in children’s rooms, as they have been connected with the triggering of feelings of fear.
Possibly the only color with no negative properties, except for the weakness to match with other colors in the house and generally in decoration. Provides mental and physical relaxation, a notion of security and
calmness and makes communication and vision easier. Combination with brown and earthly shades creates the feeling of nature, implementing the former effects.
Light shades, such as the green apple color, create a feeling of revitalization, joy and well-being.
The most popular “favorite color” ensures calmness and creativity,
“cuts of” the appetite, when in a kitchen – while on a diet, of course. Provides with a sense of security, enhances inspiration, enlarges and refreshes the rooms of a house or the children’s room. Its darker shades are the best antidote of sleeplessness
and that’s why it is frequently preferred as a color in bedrooms and
children’s rooms. If it is overused in the space (too intense) it may cause feelings of depression or melancholy.
Even if traditionally it represents purity and cleanness,white color in interior spaces creates a cold feeling and may cause feelings of loneliness and isolation.
On the other side, black color maximizes the effects of other colors (its combination with red or yellow shades has quite positive effects), but makes space look smaller, hindering our good mood.
It is recommended that usage of black in the house is limited to small, partial elements of the decoration instead of more general patterns.
The so called Earthly colors create feelings of stability and security, familiarity and family atmosphere, especially when they are combined with shades of green, bringing images of nature to mind. According to research, Red color increases blood pressure and hence our energy. It is the most suitable color for crowded spaces. Especially preferred in gyms, kitchens, halls, training rooms and stairs. The intensity of the color can cause aggressiveness and stress, thus it is advisable to be used with caution, in certain spots of these spaces and to avoid in rooms intended for relaxation. Terracotta is a very special color that can can preserve the beneficial properties of red and at the same time soften its features.
